Chargeable Weight in Shipping

Chargeable Weight is a metric used to determine the shipping rate of a package. It considers both the Gross Weight and the Volumetric Weight of the shipment and uses the greater of the two to calculate the final cost.

Definitions

  • Gross Weight: The actual weight of the shipment, including packaging and any other materials.
  • Volumetric Weight: A calculated weight based on the dimensions of the shipment.

How is volumetric weight calculated?

The formula for Volumetric Weight is:

Volumetric Weight=Length×Width×HeightDimension Factor\text{Volumetric Weight} = \frac{\text{Length} \times \text{Width} \times \text{Height}}{\text{Dimension Factor}}Volumetric Weight=Dimension FactorLength×Width×Height

The Dimension Factor varies depending on the carrier:

  • For traditional air freight: 6000
  • For express couriers like FedEx, DHL, and UPS: 5000

Example Calculation

Suppose you are shipping a carton with the following details:

  • Dimensions: 75 cm x 45 cm x 30 cm
  • Actual Weight: 10 kg
  • Dimensional Factor for air freight: 6000
  • Freight Rate: $15 per kg

Step 1: Calculate Volumetric Weight

  • Volumetric weight = (length x width x height ) ÷ dim factor
  • = (75 cm x 45 cm x 30cm) / 6000
  • = 16.90 kg (per carton)

Step 2: Determine Chargeable Weight

  • Chargeable weight = Volumetric weight VS actual weight/gross weight whichever is greater
  • 16.90 KG > 10 KG = 16.90 KG

Step 3: Calculate Air Freight Cost

  • Air Freight Cost=Freight Rate×Chargeable Weight
  • Air Freight Cost=$15×16.90 kg=$253.50

Why Airlines Use Chargeable Weight

Airlines use Chargeable Weight to ensure that both the size and the weight of the shipment are considered in the pricing. This method helps balance out the space a shipment occupies versus its actual weight. Larger, lighter items can take up more space in the aircraft, which could otherwise be used for smaller, heavier items. By using the greater value between the Volumetric Weight and the Gross Weight, carriers can optimize their pricing to reflect the true cost of transporting the goods.

Efficient Packing Tips

  • Use High-Quality Materials: Invest in sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper to protect your items.
  • Label Clearly: Mark each box with its contents and the room it belongs to; use fragile stickers for delicate items.
  • Roll Clothes: Save space and reduce wrinkles by rolling clothes instead of folding them.
  • Utilize Suitcases: Pack heavier items in wheeled suitcases for easier transport and use towels and linens as padding for fragile items.
  • Pack an Essentials Box: Prepare a box with items you'll need immediately after moving, such as toiletries, clothes, and basic kitchen items.
